Standard for Minimum System Safety Requirements for Existing Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
Background Information
The proposed addendum, IIAR 9-2020 Addendum A-202x, is intended to provide the minimum system safety requirements applicable to existing closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. This proposed addendum reflects the input received and consensus thereof from ammonia refrigeration industry practitioners and is not intended to serve as a comprehensive technical design, operation, or maintenance manual and shall not be used as such. The substantive and informative changes in the addendum will be incorporated into the standard.
This proposed addendum provides a method for existing stationary closed-circuit refrigeration systems using ammonia as the refrigerant to evaluate and document new and revise codes, standards, and practices to determine what provision within these codes, standards, and practices to adopt. This addendum also provides a method for determining and documenting existing equipment designed and constructed in accordance with codes, standards, or practices that are no longer in general use. Additional precautions may be necessary because of particular circumstances, project specifications, or other jurisdictional considerations.
This proposed addendum is directed towards the safety of persons and property on or near the premises where the refrigeration systems are located. It supplements existing general refrigeration standards issued by IIAR and other organizations such as ASHRAE, ASME, and ANSI. It is not intended to supplant existing safety codes (e.g., model mechanical or fire codes).
This proposed addendum has been approved by IIAR's Board of Directors for public review. It includes direction for the minimum system safety requirements for existing closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems.
This second (2nd) public review of the proposed addendum will be conducted from April 12th, 2024 through May 12th, 2024. American National Standards Institute (ANSI) procedures will be utilized to develop evidence of consensus for this proposed addendum. IIAR is the ANSI-Accredited standards developer for IIAR 9-2020 Addendum A-202x. Individuals, organizations, companies, government agencies, standards developers, etc., who are directly and materially affected by the proposed addendum are invited to participate in the public review.
