Decommissioning of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
Background Information
The revised standard, BSR/IIAR 8-2026, is intended to apply to decommissioning of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. It supplements existing general refrigeration standards issued by IIAR and other organizations such as ASHRAE, ASME, and ANSI. It is not intended to supplant existing safety codes (e.g., model mechanical or fire codes or ASHRAE Standard 15).
This revised standard for periodic maintenance requirements has been approved by IIAR's Board of Directors for public review. The standard includes criteria for the safe removal of an ammonia charge and decommissioning of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. The appendices include Sources of References (Informative and Normative) and a Decommissioning Check List (Informative).
This first (1st) public review of the draft safety standard will be conducted from July 10th, 2026 through August 24th, 2026. Comments must be submitted to IIAR no later than August 24th, 2026. Click here for a copy of the public review draft in electronic (pdf) form that can be printed from your computer.
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) procedures will be utilized to develop evidence of consensus for this revised standard. IIAR is the ANSI-Accredited standards developer for ANSI/IIAR 8-2026. Individuals, organizations, companies, government agencies, standards developers, etc., who are directly and materially affected by the proposed standard are invited to participate in the public review.
